1 of 1s By Jolie

When searching for a new online store to shop from, what are the qualities that you look for? Great customer service and custom clothing that’s going to set you apart from the crowd? Well, Angelique Walker, the owner of 1 of 1’s Jolie, has all that plus the ambition to keep her business thriving!

Check out the interview below to see how Angelique motivates herself to stay original in this over saturated online boutique frenzy, dreams of Beyonce’ wearing her pieces, and making a big move to Texas.

How long have you been designing?

I’ve been designing since 2013. Actually, it was the most random moment ever. It was more of a hobby I would do with my mom. She’s my inspiration.

At the time I was working in retail and I attended an event here in Memphis, where I was seeing so many ladies in the exact same outfit. Same shoe, same dress, I’m like this can’t be life! (laughs) Here in Memphis we don’t have many selections to shop. So I came home one day and I’m like about to design my own dress and my own shoe. Since that event I would get asked can I make things for people but I never really took it seriously.

When I started getting emails about orders, that’s when I said,” hey I can make this into a career!” I love designing, I loving coming up with things that might seem weird to someone else, but you’re going to eventually fall in love with it.

How do you deal with the pressure of getting out items to clients in a timely manner?

I’m glad that a lot my clientele are appreciative of custom items. They understand that it takes time to make. Communication is so important. I would whether overly communicate to make sure that the client knows that it’s in the works. I had to learn that the hard way though.

How is it finding a physical location?

Online of course you know it’s cheaper for everything. You don’t have to pay for rent, all you have to pay for is a webmaster and that’s it. Now I feel like I’m losing customers because you know women like to try on things. I feel like it’s time to take that second leap and get a location. I have a location but we want to make sure that it’s perfect. We’re trying to make sure we have something done by February 2016.

How has social media helped you and hurt you in growing your business?

It has helped me tremendously, especially with the celebrity clientele. Even with non-celebrity clients, who may have many followers. You never know whose ordering and when they share it, you can gain a lot of followers. So of course it has helped me gain business.

It has hurt me because you can’t please everyone. You never know if that one person has a big voice or you just don’t know who that person knows. So if someone has a bad experience and they blast you on social media that can really hurt.

You have some celebrity clients up under your belt. Who do look forward to working with in the future?

I love Beyonce'! If I got some jeans on Beyonce’ I don’t think no one would be able to tell me nothing! (laughs) And Rhianna and Rita Ora, they can wear anything!

What motivates you to keep going?

Just knowing that I have people rooting for me. It’s amazing the emails that I receive saying that others want to pursue their dream as well. Honestly, I didn’t have a blue print, I just wanted to be successful. I was just claiming of what I know is possible.

It’s amazing how many people wear my stuff! I literally just design in my apartment and I just do it because I love it so much!

What can we expect to see from 1 of 1’s Jolie in the next few years?

Well of course a physical location. If the move is right, to be in Dallas or Houston.  And a huge department to carry my line.

What is your favorite go-to quote?

Success is like your own shadow. If you try to catch it you will never succeed. Ignore it and walk in your own way and it will follow.

You know how you try to follow people but you have to walk to the beat of your own drum. Then watch how other people try to follow you!

By speaking with Angelique you can tell that she has a very humble spirit. We want to wish her continued success with her business and we look forward to hearing about her physical location!
